Shall we begin?

What is Benagil Cave?

This entire area of the Algarve, known as Barlavento, is surrounded by cliffs.

Over thousands of years, the water has eroded the rocks, forming several caves that can be visited on boat trips operated by experienced tour guides.

In the case of Benagil Cave, the upper part has also suffered erosion, causing its dome to collapse and leaving a hole at the top, allowing light to enter.

The cave has two entrances, which give access to a small beach.

You can visit the cave from above, but in that case, you cannot feel the grandeur of the place as you do when you enter the cave.

The combination of the light entering through the hole, the golden colors of the rock and sand, and the alternating blue and green of the crystal clear water have made this the most famous cave in the Algarve.

Where is Benagil Cave?

Located in the municipality of Lagoa, Benagil Cave is one of the Algarve’s biggest tourist attractions.

Between the towns of Lagos and Lagoa, hidden among cliffs, lies this sea cave, which offers visitors a unique spectacle of natural beauty.

Five kilometers from the well-known village of Carvoeiro, the village of Benagil is one of the many old fishing villages in the Algarve.

Along its cliffs, we can see houses with white facades, blue doors, and tall chimneys, typical of southern Portuguese architecture.

This village, like so many others, survived for many centuries on what the sea had to offer.

Even today, it is possible to see the relationship between its inhabitants and the sea, and along the various beaches of the Barlavento coast, fishing boats decorate the entire sandy shore.

Although the nearest beach is Benagil beach, this cave can be accessed from several locations.

Check the map to see exactly where it is.

Boat

– This is the safest way to do it, as you will be accompanied by experienced guides who know how to check that all the conditions are right for you to enjoy the best possible experience.

Departing from Lagos Marina, there are some tours that also include dolphin watching.

When you choose this option, you get a more comprehensive view of the work that nature has done throughout the region.

There are several caves, large and small, that give this area of the Algarve a unique and unmistakable landscape.

Kayaking or paddleboarding

These may be good options for those looking for more physical activities.

You can rent equipment on Benagil beach.

Please note that here you will be more exposed to the elements.

The water temperature, wind, and tides can make your trip less enjoyable.

By car

Although you cannot access Benagil Cave from above, you can visit the site at the top.

To do so, simply leave your car in the Benagil beach car park and walk about 300m towards the cliff.

The cave is currently closed for safety reasons, as there is a danger of collapse.

However, if you get close, you can see down into it.

When is the best time of year to visit Benagil Cave?

The best times of year are between March and June and between September and October.
